A brewery for the abbey's income
The Maria Toevlucht Abbey in Zundert received abbey status in 1938. The monastery was founded shortly after the first Dutch monastery near Tilburg, which was founded in 1881. The community's land was first used for intensive dairy farming and later for organic livestock farming. That work turned out to be too labour-intensive, after which the monks chose a small brewery as extra income.
The brewery was built in 2011 and was named De Kievit. The first beer appeared in December 2013, at that time still called Zundert Trappist. That made it the second brewery in the Netherlands with the Authentic Trappist Product label, alongside La Trappe from Berkel-Enschot.
You can't visit the brewery itself. You can't drink on the abbey grounds either. Along the Rucphenseweg, between Rucphen and Zundert, several cafés serve Zundert Trappist on tap, recognisable by purple signs.
Zundert 8, Zundert 10 and Zundert 4
The first beer is now called Zundert 8. In 2018 came the Zundert 10, the monks' second beer. The numbers refer to the alcohol percentage, so the name tells you right away how strong the beer is.
In 2023 the Zundert 4 was added. That is a lighter refectory beer, and a beer like that is traditionally brewed for use in the abbey itself, comparable to Westmalle Extra. So Zundert 10 is the strongest of the three and Zundert 4 the lightest. On Untappd the brewery is listed as Micro Brewery in Klein Zundert.
Trappistenbrouwerij de Kievit at Hoptimaal
At Hoptimaal we have carried the Zundert 10: a 10% quadrupel in 33 cl. On Untappd it is the highest-rated beer from the brewery within our range. Whether it is in stock varies, so check the webshop.
Don't drink a quadrupel like this ice cold. Take the bottle out of the fridge about fifteen minutes before opening, pour into a tulip or goblet glass and give the beer time to open up. At 10% there's no need to rush. Store bottles cool and dark.
