A brewery among the hop fields of Žalec
Clef Brewery is in Arja Vas, in the municipality of Žalec in western Slovenia. Untappd describes it as a microbrewery. The village lies in the Savinja Valley, which is also known as the Valley of Green Gold because of its hop growing. According to Craft Beer Nomads, that tradition goes back centuries.
Craft Beer Nomads visited Clef together with Green Gold Brewing, another brewery in the same municipality. According to them, both sit among the hop fields that inspire their beers. We found no reliable information on the founders, the year of founding or the brewing equipment, so we leave those out.
Pastry sours with fruit and dessert flavours
In the range we know, Clef focuses on one style: the pastry sour. These are sour beers that resemble a dessert, with fruit as the base and additions such as vanilla, coconut or cheesecake.
The names show well how they work. There is a Sour Ale with pear, walnut and maple syrup, a version with mango, passion fruit, cheesecake and vanilla, and a cherry version with tonka and red pepper. Mango with coconut and lavender, and pink guava with mascarpone, also come by. They are always fruity sours with a dessert-like side.
Clef Brewery at Hoptimaal
We have had five Clef beers, three of which are currently in stock. They are all sour beers in 50 cl, with a strength of 5.1 to 5.3%. On Untappd they are rated highly, with Hruskov zavitek, Mellow Yellow, Cherry Bomb, Kokomo and Lambada as the best rated.
Drink them cool, roughly straight from the fridge, and not ice cold. That brings out the fruit and the additions better. At 50 cl it is also a bottle to share. Buy fresh rather than keeping them for long, because fruity sours are at their best when they are young.
