From court brewery to state brewery
Hofbräuhaus was founded on 27 September 1589 by the Bavarian Duke Wilhelm V. The brewery was originally meant to supply beer only to the Bavarian court. According to the brewery, the Reinheitsgebot ensured that high-quality beer was brewed here from day one. The 'Hof' in the name refers to that time as a royal brewery in the Kingdom of Bavaria. Today the brewery is owned by the Bavarian state.
In 1828 King Ludwig I opened the Hofbräuhaus to the public. In 1879 the brewery had 'HB' registered as a trademark, after other breweries had copied the logo. For lack of space, the brewery moved to Haidhausen, to what is now the Hofbräukeller. In 1988 it moved again, to the Riem district. The Hofbräuhaus am Platzl brewed for the last time on 22 May 1896 and was then converted into the tavern you know today.
What Hofbräu München brews
Hofbräu Original is a bottom-fermented Münchner Helles (g.g.A.): full-bodied, lightly malty, with a refined bitterness in the finish. Hofbräu Dunkel is a bottom-fermented dark beer in the Munich style, with roasted malt and a light malt sweetness. According to the brewery, the Dunkel was the first beer brewed in 1589. Münchner Weisse is top-fermented. For almost 200 years, Hofbräu had the exclusive right to brew weissbier in Bavaria.
Hofbräu also brews seasonal beers: Winterzwickl, Sommerzwickl, the Oktoberfestbier and the Maibock. The brewery calls the Maibock the oldest pale bock beer in Munich, made with Munich malt and Hallertau hops (Magnum and Perle).
