A brewpub on the Ottawa River
À La Dérive is at Rue Jacques-Cartier 1015 in Gatineau, Québec. On their own website they present themselves as a restaurant with twenty taps, where you combine beer with food and a view of the Rivière des Outaouais, the Ottawa River.
The site sums up their approach in three lines: beer brewed with love and quality ingredients, driven by creativity, and made to be shared. They also make custom beers for other parties, with a row of client logos on the site. The site also lists Méga Smash Burger, a restaurant at Boulevard Saint-Joseph 920 in Gatineau that, according to the site, is entirely about smash burgers.
Hazy IPAs, imperial IPAs and more
The range is broad. On BeerAdvocate you will find witbier (Belgian white beer), saison, helles, brown ale and stout, among others, but mostly you see a lot of hazy IPAs and imperial IPAs.
Examples are Boathouse No. 2 and No. 3 (hazy IPA, 6.8%), Entretien Annuel (imperial IPA, 8.5%) and Le Houblon Ne Pousse Pas Dans Les Arbres, an imperial IPA that also exists in a version with Galaxy and Nelson Sauvin. If you want something darker, there is Gros Bégon, an imperial stout of 9%.
À La Dérive at Hoptimaal
So far, Hoptimaal has had two IPAs from À La Dérive, both in 44 cl and between 6.5 and 8.5% alcohol. Neo-Zoulou and Zibinabi are highly rated on Untappd. At the moment they are not in stock, so check the brewery page for new beers.
Drink hoppy beers like these as fresh as possible and well chilled, so the hops come into their own. Ideally, store them cool and dark. With the stronger ones, take your time, because they become more interesting as they warm up.
