A brewery from the heart of Transylvania
Blackout Brewing is based in Cluj-Napoca, in Romanian Transylvania. Their own description on Untappd is short and clear: "From the heart of Transylvania. Focused on barrel aging." That focus on barrel aging shapes the whole profile of the brewery.
Blackout started out as a gypsy brewery, so without its own brewing set-up. On Untappd there are beers that were brewed and looked after at Hophead, and an IPA that was brewed at the friendly brewery Bereta TM. Later a taproom of their own was added, The Brewhouse in Cluj-Napoca.
Barrel aged stouts and hoppy IPAs
The Untappd profile lists 375 beers, so Blackout brews a lot and in many varieties. The emphasis is on imperial stouts, often in a pastry version with chocolate, coffee, coconut or hazelnut. One example is Insania: an imperial stout with salted chocolate that aged for a year in Basil Hayden bourbon barrels and reaches 15%.
Besides the stouts they also make beers like Megalovanilla, an American strong ale that aged in bourbon barrels and is finished with vanilla. The hoppy side shows in Double Weirdo, a hazy double IPA with Sabro, Nelson and a little Idaho 7.
Blackout Brewing at Hoptimaal
From Blackout Brewing we mainly stock IPAs and stouts, along with barleywines. The strength runs from 6 to 12 percent and the beers come in cans or bottles of 33 or 44 cl. Highly rated on Untappd are the barrel-aged beers, such as Exclusion Zone with Pedro Ximenez, Sakadat on bourbon, The Past Is Obdurate on Wild Turkey, Junk Deluxe on rye whiskey and Sacru on cognac. The range changes, so check the webshop to see what's in stock now.
Drink the IPAs fresh and cool, roughly around 6 to 8 °C, so the hops stay sharp. Take the barrel aged stouts and barleywines more slowly. Take them out of the fridge a quarter of an hour before drinking, pour them in a smaller glass and feel free to share a bottle. That lets the barrel, the sweetness and the alcohol content come across better.
