From Midnight Sun to a brewery of his own
Gabe Fletcher is the brewer and founder of Anchorage Brewing Company in Anchorage, Alaska. He started brewing at Midnight Sun Brewing Company in 1998, at age 21, became head brewer there within a year and a half and stayed for thirteen years. After that he started his own brewery, which opened in 2010.
According to Fletcher himself, Anchorage Brewing Company was then the first brewery in the United States to work exclusively with Brett. In the beginning, everything was fermented in barrels.
The tasting room is special. You sit in the brewery itself, right next to the barrels and the brew kettle, and there are 120-barrel foeders that have been converted into seating. The food comes from Familia, the company of Fletcher's sister and brother-in-law, which operates in the same building. Anchorage Brewing Company doesn't advertise and hardly pushes its beer onto the market in Anchorage: if you want to drink it, you come to them.
Barrel-aged, Brett and everything in between
The focus is on barrel-aged beer, Brett beers and sour beer. They also make barrel aged imperial stouts and barleywines, but also hazy IPAs and pilsners.
The market changed: people no longer wanted big 750 ml bottles of saison. Fletcher adapted, but says they kept brewing what they want to brew themselves. Lately they have been focusing more on Brett and mixed culture beers again.
The brewery's website lists, among others, Fingal, a coolship saison, Black Barrel and The Bad Men, a mixed culture sour with blackberries, the Czech style pilsner Time For A Change and the alcohol-free hop water Tiger Tears. They made collaboration beers with, among others, Tired Hands, Mikkeller, Hill Farmstead and Monkish. A Deal With the Devil is considered one of the sought-after releases.
