A castle as a brewery
Brasserie des Légendes grew out of the dream of Pierre and Vinciane Delcoigne. They bought the Castel d'Irchonwelz, restored it between 1997 and 2000 and set up the brewery there. In 2000 they brewed their first beer, the Gouyasse.
The business then grew step by step. They took over the family farm for barley production and bought Brasserie Ellezelloise, known for Quintine and Hercule, which was looking for a buyer. A tavern followed, Au Chaudron des Légendes in Ellezelles, and the brewery was expanded and modernised in several phases, including a chai. Together with Cédric De Taeye they started a chocolaterie. In 2019 they rescued the Distillerie de Biercée.
Today a team of around twenty people works there, and the brewery produces around 18,000 hectolitres a year.
Traditional brewing, as local as possible
According to the brewery itself, these are beers with character, 100% natural. They use modern equipment, such as brewing and fermentation tanks and a bottling line, but the method stays traditional. Only four basic ingredients go in: malt, water, hops and yeast, with no colourings or other additives.
They keep the whole chain as local as possible. The barley comes from the Beauregard family farm, the malting is done at the Malterie du Château 10 kilometres away and the hops are Belgian. The installation is also geared towards sustainability: its own natural water purification, reuse of residual heat, 250 solar panels and 54 m² of thermal panels to preheat the brewing water. Quintine Nature, from their own stable, won gold at a competition for organic products in Lyon.
Brasserie des Légendes at Hoptimaal
We stock three beers from Brasserie des Légendes, all three in 33 cl: La Corne Blond, La Corne Tripel and La Corne du Bois des Pendus Quadruple. The strength ranges from 5.9 to 12%. All three are rated highly on Untappd, with the quadrupel at the top, followed by the tripel and the blond.
Drink the blond and the tripel cool, so the freshness comes through. The quadrupel benefits from a little more time: pour it slightly less cold and take your time, and the many layers in a heavy beer come into their own.
