Brujos Brewing
Brujos Brewing is a small brewery from Portland, Oregon, set up by Sam Zermeño. They're known for heavily hopped hazy IPAs and stouts, packaged in dark, occult imagery. For a long time the beers were mainly available through monthly can releases. Since March 2024 they have had their own taproom in a former brewery space.

From a California driveway to Portland
Brujos Brewing is Sam Zermeño's project. He was born in Tijuana and moved with his family to California when he was eight. He discovered craft beer in his twenties. In 2014 he started homebrewing with his brother on the driveway of their parents' house. Their father saw them bent over the kettle and said they looked like brujitos making magic potions. That's how Zermeño got the name.
Brujos began as a side project with a 10-gallon mash tun and grew through word of mouth. In 2022 Zermeño struck a deal with Great Notion Brewing for the first official release. Production was then scaled up at Living Haus Beer. In July 2023, together with Scott Lemaster and Jesse McFarland, he rented the vacated space of Hammer & Stitch Brewing on NW Wilson Street in Portland. The taproom opened on 2 March 2024, decorated as a Gothic cathedral. Ivan Morales was the first employee and works as brand ambassador.
Heavily hopped and dark in look
Brujos is known for hazy IPAs with double and triple dry hopping, and for stouts. Zermeño himself actually started with malty beers, mainly stouts. In his early years he found IPAs too bitter, until hazy IPAs became a passion.
The look is as recognisable as the beer: skulls and demons on the labels, black metal and occult iconography. According to Zermeño, it's more about community than about belief. The monthly limited can releases drew queues before the taproom officially opened.
Brujos Brewing at Hoptimaal
Six Brujos beers have come in at our shop, all IPAs, with a strength between 9.2 and 12.2% and in 47.3 cl packaging. Highly rated on Untappd are Los Vigilantes Oscuros, Sitra Achra, Death To False Wizards, Infinitum, Nobosuma and Unholy Chvrch (Brujos Edition). Stock changes with each release, so check the page to see what's in right now.
Drink these IPAs as fresh as possible and cool, so the hops stay at their best. Because of the high alcohol percentage they don't need to be ice cold: drinking a bit slower from a smaller glass shows more of the beers. Sharing with a fellow beer lover isn't a bad idea either with a 47.3 cl can.
