A beer connoisseur who couldn't find an alcohol-free beer
BRULO was founded in the spring of 2019 by James Brown, with the aim of making hoppy, alcohol-free craft beer. Brown previously built Beer52 into a craft beer community with more than 200,000 members and tasted thousands of beers. When he looked for an alcohol-free beer he actually wanted to drink, he couldn't find one. So he brewed one, then another, and eventually hundreds of recipes.
The brewery is based in Edinburgh. The logo is a wide-open eye, drawn by designer James Ockelford, who took inspiration from Japanese poster art of the 1960s.
Brewed alcohol-free from day one
At BRULO the alcohol is not removed from the beer afterwards. Every beer is alcohol-free from the start of the brew day. The brewery says it uses no natural flavourings, but quality ingredients, special yeast cultures and modern brewing techniques. The beers are vegan.
The current range has seven beers: the IPAs Lust For Life, 7 Hop 7 Grain and All Good, the NEIPA King For A Day, the lager Highway To Helles, the stout Cascadian Tides and the gose Five Fruit. The Single Hop Series and the Double Dry Hop Series were released earlier. BRULO won Great Taste awards in 2026, and in a blind tasting by The Telegraph the beers scored 5 out of 5.
BRULO at Hoptimaal
At Hoptimaal we have stocked four beers from BRULO, all in 33 cl: three IPAs and a sour beer. On Untappd, BRULO Sabro Galaxy DDH IPA, 7 Hop 7 Grain DDH IPA, Lust For Life DDH IPA and 5 Fruit Gose are rated highest. The strength is between 0 and 0.5%. Check this page to see which beers are in stock right now.
Drink the DDH IPAs as fresh as possible and well chilled, so the hops are at their best. So check the best-before date on the can or bottle. You drink the gose cold too, because that brings out the fruity and sour sides best.
