A brewery in the Appelhoek of Melle
According to the brewery itself, beer has been brewed on the site in the Appelhoek in Melle since 1654. In 1902 Leon Huyghe came from Poperinge to Melle and started working in the local brewery. He was married to Delfina Van Doorselaer, a brewer's daughter from Wolvertem. In 1906 he bought the brewery and named it Brouwerij-Mouterij den Appel.
After the First World War, the brew kettles that the occupying forces had requisitioned had to be replaced quickly. One of those kettles now hangs as a dome above the bar in the brewery museum. In 1936 construction began on a new complex on the Geraardsbergsesteenweg. The brewhouse has stood there since 1939 and is still the pride of the brewery. The fourth generation of the family now invests in quality, sustainability and craftsmanship.
Delirium Tremens and the rest of the range
Delirium Tremens was born on 26 December 1988, a Belgian blond with pink elephants on the label. According to the brewery, its character comes from the use of three different yeasts. In 1997 it was nominated as the best beer in the world by the American beer hunter Stuart A. Kallen. A year later it won a gold medal at the Chicago World Beer Championship.
Over the years Huyghe took over other brands, including Campus, St Idesbald and Vieille Villers, and also brews Paranoia, Floris and La Guillotine. In 2010 came Delirium Red, Artevelde Premier Cru and Mongozo Premium Pilsener (gluten-free, fairtrade and organic). Deliria, brewed by women, appeared in 2013. Delirium Black from 2019 is Delirium Nocturnum and Delirium Christmas, aged nine months on oak bourbon barrels. At 11.8%, it is the strongest beer from the brewery.
