Brothers-in-law with roots in wine country
Firestone Walker was founded in 1996 by brothers-in-law Adam Firestone and David Walker. The brewery started small, with roots in the wine country of California's Central Coast. Its headquarters are now in Paso Robles. In 2026 the brewery celebrates thirty years.
The company itself names traditions, patience and quality as its starting point, explicitly over trends. Nick Firestone is CEO and Matt Brynildson is brewmaster. According to PitchBook, Firestone Walker is now a subsidiary of Duvel Moortgat.
Oak, English traditions and hops
The brewery's best-known beer is Double Barrel Ale, DBA for short. It has been brewed continuously since the founding and, according to the brewery, is the only American beer that is partly fermented in oak barrels. PitchBook describes Firestone Walker as a brewery of pale ales and barrel aged beers, based on classic English brewing traditions from Burton-upon-Trent.
Besides DBA, the range includes Union Jack IPA, Pivo Pilsner and Firestone IPA, among others. For the anniversary, Easy Jack IPA returned in a mixed pack, together with a limited Double IPA, Diesel Thunder. On its own website, the brewery also shows that it takes sustainable brewing seriously.
Firestone Walker at Hoptimaal
With us, it's about the heavier side of Firestone Walker. We had five of their beers, of which three stouts, a quadrupel and a barleywine, all in 35.5 cl and with a strength of 11 to 16.5 percent. On Untappd, Parabola, Heavy Things, Heavy Souls, Stickee Pig and TØNNE TROLL are rated highest. Stock changes, so check the page to see what's in right now.
These are beers for slow drinking. Don't serve them ice cold: take them out of the fridge a quarter of an hour before opening, so aroma and depth come through better. Share a bottle or drink it in a small glass, because with this strength you want to take your time. They keep well in a cool, dark place, but you don't need to wait years for them.
