Owners who brew in Vītoliņi themselves
Hopalaa is located on an industrial estate in Vītoliņi, in the Jelgava district of Latvia. The company behind the brewery is called Fermentum LTD. You can visit at weekends by appointment.
The core of their story is that the owners brew themselves. They say they are involved in every step, from milling the grain to adding the yeast. They also pour the beer themselves: when they are behind the tap, they tell you how the beer came about with every glass.
On the website, they talk about a brewing journey of eight years. In that time, they worked with colleagues such as Elvis and Elgars from the area, Alexey from Belarus, Antoine from France and Xavi from Catalonia.
Brewing anything that tastes good
Hopalaa doesn't commit to one style. Their motto is that they brew an IPA, stout, pilsner or sour if it tastes good. They say they combine the latest hop innovations with proven techniques and keep refining every recipe.
The range we have had from them is hoppy. These are IPAs with a strength between 6.5 and 10%. On Untappd, Hopalaa TRINITY, Hopalaa Haze Horizon, Hopalaa LUPOCORE MIX and Hopalaa TE HOROKŌAU are rated highly.
Hopalaa at Hoptimaal
So far, we have stocked four beers from Hopalaa. All four are IPAs and they come in 44 cl. Right now, none of them are in stock, so check the brewery page to see if a new delivery has arrived.
Drink hoppy IPAs as fresh as possible and cold, so the hops and aroma come through best. With the strongest versions, close to 10%, it pays to drink slowly and let the beer warm up a little in the glass.
