From kitchen table to brewery in Placentia
The Bruery comes from Placentia, California. According to the brewery itself, it all started with Patrick Rue in his kitchen, with a hunger to learn how interesting beer can be. He opened the brewery in 2008 and later became a Master Cicerone. The name is a contraction of his surname and the word brewery.
Rue built a team of brewers around him. Some come from small craft breweries, others from Californian wineries. In 2017 the brewery announced that a majority stake had gone to the American investment fund Castanea Partners. Besides the tasting room in Placentia, there is also a location in Meridian, Idaho.
Flavor over style
The brewery says it never aims for a particular style. Flavor is the compass. Inspiration comes from the culinary world, traditional beer styles, natural ingredients, vineyards and even junk food.
Wikipedia describes the beers as experimental ales in the Belgian tradition, made with their own Belgian yeast strain. Orchard White contains coriander, bitter orange peel and lavender. Pinotlambicus uses Pediococcus, Lactobacillus and pinot noir grapes. Oak barrels also play a big role. In the brewery's webshop you'll find barrel-aged stouts, sour and wild ales, Belgian styles and beer-wine hybrids.
Experiments that can't be scaled up end up in the Society Membership, a subscription with beers you can't get anywhere else. The trophy cabinet is full: People's Choice at the Firestone Walker Invitational in 2014 and 2019, twelve medals at the Great American Beer Festival and second place among Californian breweries on Untappd.
The Bruery at Hoptimaal
With us, it's all about the stouts from The Bruery: Black Tuesday and Black Tuesday Blender's Choice, both in 37.5 cl and with a strength between 19.1 and 19.9 percent. On Untappd they are rated highly. Black Tuesday is also the favorite beer of cellar manager Micah Rush.
With strengths like these, you drink slowly. Don't serve them ice cold but a few degrees above fridge temperature, so the aromas can open up. Pour a small glass and feel free to share the bottle, because 37.5 cl is plenty at this level.
