From a brewer without premises to Bridgman
Transient Artisan Ales comes from Bridgman, a small town in Berrien County on Lake Michigan. According to TasteAtlas, the brewery was founded by Chris Betts, with the idea of making authentic farmhouse beers and spontaneously fermented beers.
In the beginning Transient worked as a gypsy brewery, without a facility of its own. The move to Bridgman brought its own taproom, a space for barrel ageing and a beer garden. You'll find the brewery at 4229 Lake Street, in a region known for local craft drinks: Harbor Country.
Farmhouse as the starting point, with plenty of variety
According to Visit Southwest Michigan, Transient brews from a farmhouse-inspired philosophy. The range runs from barrel-aged stouts and hop-forward IPAs to mixed-fermentation sours and rustic saisons.
That source names thick pastry stouts, double dry-hopped hazy IPAs and funky wild ales that mature on oak as their best-known beers. In the taproom the tap list changes, and the brewery regularly releases beers in limited runs in cans. That gives you an idea of the range: from wild and dry to heavy and sweet.
Transient Artisan Ales at Hoptimaal
At our shop the focus is on the heaviest part of their work. All five beers we have had from Transient are stouts in 50 cl, with a strength between 13 and 17%. On Untappd they are highly rated. They are Buckley Latvia Select, Buckley Reserve #2 (2025), Vanilla Kamigoye 2025, Canuckley (2025) and Kamigoye (2025).
Beers of this calibre are for sipping slowly. Take them out of the fridge a quarter of an hour before opening, because too cold hides the chocolate, vanilla and fruity notes. Pour them into a snifter or tulip glass and feel free to share a 50 cl bottle between two. Store them upright in a cool, dark place.
