From Small Bar to harbourside brewpub
It started in 2014, when Rich Poole walked into Small Bar in Bristol and handed beer to Bruce Gray and Jack Granger. They first brewed on a 200-litre kit at the back of that same bar and then worked as a cuckoo brewery, without a site of their own. On LinkedIn, Jack Granger is listed as managing director and founder.
The brewery of their own started in 2017. Through Crowdcube, Left Handed Giant then raised more than £1 million from the local community for the brewpub overlooking the floating harbour in central Bristol. It opened in 2019 in the old brewery complex at Finzels Reach, where George's & Co and later Courage used to brew.
The brewery is owned by its founders, employees and the community. There are around 1,500 shareholders, more than 80% of whom have a BS postcode.
Modern beers from two brewing sites
According to its own website, Left Handed Giant brews modern, progressive beers in various styles. This happens at two sites in Bristol: at the taproom in St Philips and in the brewpub. Together that comes to roughly 7,000 hectolitres a year.
Most of it goes straight to the taps in their own venues: the brewpub at Finzels Reach, the taproom in St Philips and still Small Bar. The rest goes to independent pubs, bars and bottle shops.
They also look at the history of their own location. Together with Bristol Beer Factory they made a porter based on a nineteenth-century archive recipe from George's & Co, available on cask, keg and can. According to a post from the brewery itself, Left Handed Giant won twelve awards at the 2024 Untappd awards.
Left Handed Giant at Hoptimaal
At Hoptimaal we stocked Left Handed Giant PVA (Pretty Viscous Ale), an 8% IPA in a 44 cl pack. On Untappd, this is the highest-rated beer from the brewery in our range. It is not always in stock, so check the webshop to see what is available now.
Drink hoppy beers like this one as fresh as possible and store them cool. Serve them cool rather than ice-cold, so the hops and the full body come through. At 8%, feel free to take your time with it.
