Four friends and a garage in Zagreb
Pulfer began when four friends decided to start a brewery, before they knew much about brewing. To change that, they first brewed on a small scale in a garage, to learn the craft and develop recipes. In 2016 Pulfer started as a gypsy brewery. In 2019 a brewery of their own followed in Zagreb.
The name comes from the platform that couples tram cars together. On the last car, brave 'pulferistas' rode along for free, outside the car. That was a minor offence, with the risk of falling or being punished by the militia. They did it anyway, and pulfering became a symbol of positive rebellion and inexhaustible energy.
Today the brewery is in Žitnjak, in the east of Zagreb. The small team brews on a 10-hectolitre brewhouse, with 160 hectolitres of fermentation capacity. In 2024 production came to roughly 200,000 litres.
Smoothie Sours, IPAs and an experimental streak
Pulfer started with only four beers, mostly IPAs. More and more styles followed later. At one point they experimented a lot with saisons, a style that was still barely known in Croatia. That earned them a reputation as a creative and experimental brewery.
Now Pulfer is mainly known for Smoothie Sours and IPAs, and for its artistic label designs. The team brews beers they like to drink themselves. That put the brewery somewhat ahead of the market in Croatia, because the local public warms up only slowly to styles like Smoothie Sours. That was one reason to focus on export: roughly half of the production goes to other European countries.
Pulfer Brewery at Hoptimaal
With us you will mostly find sour beer and IPAs from Pulfer, supplemented with stouts and a lager. The strength ranges from 2.5 to 12.7 percent. Almost everything comes in 50 cl, a single beer in 33 cl. Highly rated on Untappd are Pulfer For Goodness Shake: Carribean Bean, Pulfer The Gauntlet and Pulfer Pie Hard & Finnish It, among others.
Drink the sours and IPAs as fresh as possible and well chilled, so the fruit and hops come out best. A 50 cl bottle is easy to share. Pour the heavier stouts more slowly: take them out of the fridge a bit earlier and give them time to open up.
