A family brewery in the Bamberg Wunderburg
Mahrs Bräu is based in the Wunderburg in Bamberg. According to its own website, the brewery has been family-owned since 1895 and is firmly rooted in Upper Franconia. Stephan Michel is the sole owner and the brewmaster. The brewery describes itself as a private company that has been run for four generations.
The site is clear about their attitude: they leave cheap beer to mass production, and brewing a few extra hectolitres is not a goal in itself. According to them, character is what it's all about.
After decades of exporting to the United States and Canada, Michel decided to brew his Bavarian-Franconian lager on the spot in the US as well. Together with a good friend from Bamberg, he founded Mahrs Bräu of America for this purpose.
Bavarian-Franconian lagers according to the Reinheitsgebot
By its own account, Mahrs Bräu brews according to the Bamberger Reinheitsgebot of 1489 and on the basis of original family recipes. For the lagers, they use only ingredients from Bamberg and from the Hallertau in Bavaria.
By its own account, the company combines craft tradition with modern brewing technology. The American site shows three 500 ml cans: a cloudy amber beer, a clear light yellow beer and a golden yellow beer.
Mahrs Bräu at Hoptimaal
We had the Mahrs Bräu Sommerpils, a pilsner in 50 cl with an alcohol percentage of 2.8%. It is currently out of stock. On Untappd, this is the highest-rated Mahrs Bräu beer in our range.
A light pilsner like this is best drunk fresh and well chilled. Pour it into a glass, so the carbonation and the hop bitterness come out well.
