From monastery brewery to foundation
In 1328 Augustinian monks began brewing in their monastery near the cathedral of Munich. For almost 500 years the brothers brewed their own beer and sold it in the monastery tavern. In 1803 the state took over the monastery during secularisation and the brewery was privatised. In 1829 the brewer Anton Wagner from Freising took over the business. His son Josef Wagner had a modern brewery built on the Landsberger Straße, at the time the edge of the city. All Augustiner beer is still brewed there.
The building was badly damaged in the Second World War and was rebuilt after the old design. The red brick façade is now protected. Since 1996 the Edith-Haberland-Wagner Stiftung has been the majority shareholder, and more than half of the proceeds go to that foundation's charitable cause. The year 1328 is the date the brewery itself uses. Historians question the documentation for it, and brewing in the monastery is firmly recorded from 1411.
Their beer and style
Augustiner draws its brewing water from its own well, 230 metres deep, and makes its own malt in a historic Tennenmälzerei on the brewery grounds. The brewery names quality, tradition and regionality as its main pillars. It does brew with modern machines and installations. The Helles in the traditional wooden cask gets a lot of attention, and according to the brewery it is the oldest reusable packaging in the world.
The permanent range consists of Lagerbier Hell, Edelstoff, Weißbier, Pils and Dunkel, plus an alcohol-free Hell. Then there is the seasonal beer Oktoberfestbier, a Märzen. Augustiner is one of the six Munich breweries allowed to serve at the Oktoberfest. It is the only one that still uses 200-litre wooden casks there, the Hirschen. The Wiesnbier has 6.3% alcohol. The Hell in the rounded half-litre bottle with the monk on the label has cult status in Munich.
