A brewmaster in the Dominikanerstraße
Graser is in Bamberg, a city in Bavaria that has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1993 and where you find many breweries within walking distance of each other. On its own site, Graser tells its history with one quote: in 1866, Konrad Graser ascended the Gambrinus throne in the Dominikanerstraße, as brewmaster at Heller.
Before that, he had already been a brewer for decades at Brauerei Michaelsberg, according to the site the oldest brewery in Bamberg, with a documented brewing right since 1154. Today Graser runs as a Wirtshaus with a brewery pub. The menu has Franconian classics such as Schäuferla, Krustenbraten and schnitzel, plus Kaiserschmarrn. The HOY Boutique Hotel is also part of the business.
Franconian lagers and a brown beer
Graser's beer is traditionally Franconian. The site lists Helles Lagerbier, Schenkbier, Fränkisches Pils, Felsenkellerbier and Braunbier, with matching dishes such as Sauerbraten and the Graserpfanne.
These are not beers to chase for extreme hoppiness or strength. You get lagers and pils in a Bavarian beer style, made to drink with food and to have more than one. On Untappd, the Braunbier and the Fränkisches Pils score particularly well.
Graser at Hoptimaal
At Hoptimaal we have already had six beers from Graser, all in 50 cl. The focus is on Lager & Pilsner, with a strength between 4.9 and 5.6 percent. What is in stock at the moment changes, so have a look in the webshop.
Drink the lagers and the pils fresh and well chilled, so the malt and the bitter finish stay crisp. The Braunbier can be a touch warmer, which brings out the brown character better. Pour them in an ordinary beer glass and store them dark and cool, because these beers do not get better from long storage.
