A family brewery in Bischberg near Bamberg
Hausbrauerei zur Sonne is in Bischberg, in Bavaria, in the Bamberg region. It is a brewery with a gastwirtschaft: you drink the beer on the spot in the taproom or, in summer, in the shady beer cellar. The brewery has been owned by the Schuhmann family since 1856.
Dieter Schuhmann handed the business over to his two sons. Christian Schuhmann is responsible for the beer, while Peter Schuhmann runs the kitchen and makes Franconian dishes such as the Bierbrauerschnitzel and the Brauerpfanne with dark beer sauce. In 2000 the brewery got a new yeast and lagering cellar. According to Bierothek, that expansion was needed because demand for the beer kept growing. If you want to stay the night, there are 18 guest rooms.
Franconian lagers and an unfiltered weizen
The core range lagers in the cellar: Sonnenpils, Helles Premium Lagerbier, Zunft Trunk Dunkel, a seasonal bock and an unfiltered weizen. The beer leaves the brewery in bottles or in party kegs. On Untappd, the brewery is listed as a brew pub.
These are traditional Franconian styles: hell, pilsner, dunkel, bock and weizen. According to Bierothek, the brewing follows tried-and-tested recipes, and the Urtyp and the Zunft Trunk have carried the brewery's reputation far beyond Upper Franconia. On BeerAdvocate, the Urtyp Hell is listed at 4.8% and the Zunft-Trunk Dunkel at 5.3%. Don't expect experiments or hop bombs here, but soundly brewed beer that belongs to the region.
Sonne Bischberg at Hoptimaal
From this brewery we have lager, pilsner and a weizen, all in 50 cl bottles. The strength is between 4.8 and 5.2%. The most highly rated on Untappd are the Sonnen Weisse and the Urtyp Hell. The range changes, so check the page to see what is in stock now.
Drink these beers fresh and chilled, but not ice-cold: a hell or pilsner only lets its malt and bitterness come through properly when it is a few degrees above fridge temperature. Pour the Weisse into a tall weizen glass. It is an unfiltered weizen, so leave a little in the bottle if you don't want the yeast, or roll the bottle to mix it in if you do.
