A butcher who became a brewer
Keesmann Bräu is in Bamberg, a city full of historic breweries, and with its founding year of 1867 it is one of the younger names there. Founder Georg Keesmann was a butcher. At the age of 51 he went to university and earned the brewing qualifications he needed to start his new business.
According to a 2013 visit report, it was the only brewery in the city that has stayed in the same family since its founding. You'll find the brewery at Wunderburg 5, behind the brewery pub. Mahrs is also in the same district. Annual production is around 15,000 hectolitres, large by Bamberg standards.
The pub itself is traditional, with a wooden interior. In the Schwemme, the passage by the entrance, regulars stand and drink a beer they get through the serving hatch. Behind the building is the Brauhof-Garten with around a hundred seats.
Herren Pils as the signature beer
The best-known beer is Bamberger Herren Pils (4.6%). It is a pleasantly bitter pilsner that, according to the 2013 visit report, makes up more than 90 percent of production. A pilsner is not an obvious bestseller in Bamberg, and that is exactly why Keesmann stands out.
The year-round range also includes Sternla Lager (5.0%), Weisse and Hell, which is only available in bottles. In autumn the Bock follows, with a well-attended Bockanstich as the opening party. During Lent the brewery serves Josephi-Bock, a bock that was originally brewed for St Joseph's Day in March.
Keesmann Bräu at Hoptimaal
We carry the Keesmann Bräu Weisse, a weizen in 50 cl. On Untappd this beer is rated highly. It is the only Keesmann beer we have had so far, so the range is small. Still, the Weisse is a good way to get to know a brewery that is mainly known for its pilsner.
Drink a weizen fresh and cool, from a proper weizen glass. It is not a hoppy beer, so you don't need to serve it ice cold. Store the bottle dark and cool, and drink it well before the best-before date.
